Here is some basic furnace and heating terminology that is useful to know.
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency): A rating that denotes the efficiency of gas heating equipment. It is the amount of heating your equipment delivers for every dollar spent on fuel. A higher rating indicates more efficient equipment. This rating is calculated in accordance with Department of Energy test procedures. New equipment is available in AFUE ratings from 80 percent to 98 percent.
BTU (British Thermal Unit): A rating that denotes the capacity of heating equipment. A BTU is further defined as the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
Stages (Adjustable Capacity): This refers to the ability of heating systems to operate at different BTU levels during a heating cycle. It is sometimes referred to as "modulating" or "multi-stage."
